Club Activities- Spring 2005

Spring BBQ -May 5, 2005

Members gathered at the South Farms on Reading Day for an evening BBQ and some fun. While the food was grilling, daring members played softball.

Ag-In-The-Classroom, Carrie Busey Elementary School -April 22, 2005

Club members helped at an Ag In The Classroom event at Carrie Busey Elementary. Fifth graders learned about ag biotechnology. First, they matched up the crop with the improvement amde possible through genetic engineering

Club Awards Banquet, Hawthorne Suites -April 21, 2005

Feedstuffs Kits Assembly-April 20, 2005

Feedstuffs kits assembled last fall were a big hit and the club made more to sell. Nathan Karplus, Nathan Schnettgoecke, Jared Walter and Regan Joehl put feedstuffs into individual jars

SASES Southern Regional Meetings, College Station, Texas-April 15-17, 2005

Club members wait at O'Hare for their plane to Houston. Everyone looks perky for being sleepless
The first event was the Friday night BBQ at the Beef Center
Everyone participated in an Texas trivia quiz. Do you know the Texas state rock?
On Saturday, members participated in a tour of Texas A & M and Texas agriculture. The first stop was the revered Kyle Field, where everyone got to step on the turf!
The Texas A & M campus is very beautiful
The tour stopped at the previous site of the college's annual bonfire, where 12 people were killed in 1999 during construction. The site is now a memorial
After lunch and a few speakers, members headed out to see some soil pits
At the Ag Experiment Station, Blake Peterson heard about cotton production
Dan Lamoreux, Krista Ubbenga, Kate Legge, and Nathan Schnettgoecke wait to eat ribeye at the Saturday night banquet
Before heading to the airport on Sunday, members took a quick detour to the Star of the Republic Museum, the site where Texas declared its independence. Krista Ubbenga and Kate Legge rest in front of a 28-star flag

NACTA Crops Contest, Norfolk, Nebraska -April 14-15, 2005

ExplorACES-March 11-12, 2005

Members set up the display board and plants for the Field and Furrow exhibit in the Turner Hall lounge
The club board was updated with new captions and pictures
Live specimens of various Illininois field crop diseases, plants, and weeds were shown
along with interesting facts about each
The plant display looks great next to the club trophy cabinet

Nathan Schnettgoecke organized the Field and Furrow display and was there with a smile for every minute of setup and take down, and for both days of the event (what a trooper!)

Seed Set Assembly-March 8, 2005

Members put one of four base seeds (corn, oats, wheat, soybean) into bags
TJ scoops the right amount of soybean into each bag, while Jared and Kate add contaminants
Each base grain has various levels of contaminants added to some of the bags
Kate and Andrew compare notes on how much fun they are having
Nathan Schnettgoecke gets the important task of "mothball crushing"
Boxes are constructed to hold all the seed bags
Members form an assembly line to put each set of four base grains (control and 3 bags with contaminants) into boxes. Seed sets are sold to high school FFA clubs for use in grain judging practice

Lounge Cleanup-February 26, 2005

Advisor Bob Dunker gets the dusty job of removing the trophies from the top of the lounge partition
Over the years, the club has won numerous awards, including "Best Agronomy Club in the Nation"
Regan Joehl picked several new plants to put in the lounge. He has a special fondness for the banana plant
Regan Joehl, Bob Dunker, and Jared Walter hang a new, large bulletin board on the lounge wall. Centering the board properly is important
A few weeks later, Nathan Karplus does his part by shining up the many club trophies before they go into their new home

Speech Contest -February 21, 2005

Contestants Andrew Bowman,
Mike Meyer, and TJ Ruyle chose a topic and prepared a 5-7 minute speech to give to the audience and judges
Nicolas Martin, President of the Crop Sciences Graduate Student Organization, and Nathan Karplus, eagerly wait to hear the speeches
Official judges for the evening were Bob Dunker, Patricia Stoller, Wayne Pedersen, and Nicolas Martin
Nancy and Bob Hoeft graciously opened their home to host the contest
Kate Legge and Andrew Bowman enjoyed the food provided by the Hoefts for after the contest
Mike Meyer is happy that his speech is over and he can eat a little ice cream. Nathan Karplus is just happy to eat.
